The 75% Attendance Rule Explained
Most Indian universities and colleges require a minimum 75% attendance to be eligible to sit for semester exams. Some institutions allow 65% with a medical certificate.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if attendance falls below 75%?
Students with less than 75% attendance are typically marked "detained" or "not eligible" (NE) for semester exams. They must re-enroll for those subjects in the next cycle, losing a full academic year. Some colleges offer conditional eligibility at 65–74% with a medical or duty-leave certificate.
Does attendance apply per subject or overall?
In most Indian engineering and degree colleges, attendance is calculated per subject. You must maintain 75% in each individual subject, not just overall. Bunking only one subject repeatedly can make you ineligible for that paper even if overall attendance is fine.
Are online classes counted for attendance?
Post-2020, most colleges count online/hybrid classes in attendance. The UGC and AICTE have allowed colleges to include online sessions. Check with your college administration for their specific policy on attendance for online versus in-person sessions.
Can a faculty or dean grant attendance exemption?
Colleges can condone attendance shortfall of up to 10% (from 75% to 65%) for medical reasons, inter-college sports, NCC/NSS duties, or official college events. Students must submit supporting documents. The final decision rests with the principal or examination committee.
