How to calculate fuel cost for a trip

Calculating the fuel cost of any trip takes just two steps. First work out how much fuel the journey needs, then multiply by the price of fuel at the pump.

Fuel needed (litres) = Distance ÷ Mileage (km/l)
Total cost = Fuel needed × Fuel price per litre

Worked example 1 — petrol trip

You drive 500 km in a car that gives 18 km/l, with petrol at ₹105/litre:

  • Fuel needed = 500 ÷ 18 = 27.78 litres
  • Total cost = 27.78 × ₹105 = ₹2,917
  • Cost per km = ₹2,917 ÷ 500 = ₹5.83/km

Worked example 2 — diesel trip

You drive 300 km in a car that gives 20 km/l, with diesel at ₹90/litre:

  • Fuel needed = 300 ÷ 20 = 15 litres
  • Total cost = 15 × ₹90 = ₹1,350
  • Cost per km = ₹1,350 ÷ 300 = ₹4.50/km

How is fuel cost calculated?

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price. For example, 300 km at 15 kmpl with petrol at ₹103/litre → 20 litres needed → ₹2,060 total fuel cost.

What is a realistic fuel efficiency to enter for my car?

ARAI-certified figures are ideal lab numbers. In real driving, reduce by 20–30%. A car rated 18 kmpl typically delivers 12–15 kmpl in city traffic or highway at 100+ km/h with AC on. Enter your actual observed mileage for accurate results.

Why does petrol cost more than diesel in India?

Diesel is more heavily subsidised historically in India as it powers commercial vehicles and agriculture. Petrol pricing is market-linked. The gap has narrowed since 2014 deregulation but diesel typically remains ₹10–20/litre cheaper.

How does CNG mileage work with this calculator?

CNG efficiency is measured in km/kg (not kmpl). Enter km/kg in the fuel efficiency field and CNG price per kg in the price field. A typical CNG car delivers 18–22 km/kg, making CNG significantly cheaper per kilometre than petrol.

Does fuel price vary within a city?

Yes, slightly — by 20–50 paise depending on the pump and area. State taxes, central excise and dealer margins all vary. Prices also change daily. Always check current prices before a long trip.

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Use two simple steps. First, fuel needed (litres) = Distance ÷ Mileage (km/l). Then, total cost = Fuel needed × Fuel price per litre. For example, a 500 km trip at 18 km/l with petrol at ₹105/litre needs 27.78 litres and costs about ₹2,917.

How much petrol for 100 km?

Divide 100 by your car's mileage. At 18 km/l you need 100 ÷ 18 = 5.56 litres, which at ₹100/litre costs about ₹556. A more efficient car at 25 km/l needs only 4 litres for 100 km.

How to reduce fuel cost?

Keep tyres at the correct pressure, avoid hard acceleration and braking, use the AC sensibly, remove excess weight and roof carriers, and maintain a steady highway speed of 60–80 km/h. Regular servicing, clean air filters and combining errands into one trip also cut fuel use. Switching to CNG can lower per-km cost significantly.
