How road trip costs are calculated

This calculator uses three components: fuel cost based on your vehicle's efficiency, a flat toll estimate, and a per-person split.

Fuel Cost
Litres = Distance ÷ Efficiency
Fuel Cost = Litres × Price/litre
Example: 500 km at 15 kmpl, ₹103/litre → 33.3 litres → ₹3,433
Toll Estimate
Toll ≈ ₹2.5 × Distance (km)
This is a flat estimate for 4-wheelers on National Highways. State highways may charge differently.

Tips to reduce road trip costs

Fuel Economy

Maintain tyre pressure, avoid aggressive acceleration, use cruise control on highways, and service your vehicle before long trips.

FASTag

FASTag gives 2.5% cashback on toll payments and eliminates queuing. Ensure your FASTag is linked and has sufficient balance.

Carpool

The per-person cost drops steeply as you add passengers. Four people in one car is often cheaper than two economy flights for short routes.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the toll estimate?

The ₹2.5/km estimate is a rough average for 4-wheelers on National Highways. Actual tolls depend on your specific route, vehicle category and the toll plazas on that road. Check NHAI's toll calculator at tis.nhai.gov.in for exact figures.

What fuel efficiency should I use for my car?

Use the ARAI-certified mileage as a baseline but reduce it by 15–25% for highway driving at high speed, AC use, and a loaded vehicle. A car rated at 18 kmpl might deliver 13–15 kmpl on a real road trip.

Does this include food, accommodation or parking?

No, this calculator covers fuel and tolls only. Use the Travel Budget Planner on this site to add accommodation, food and activity costs.

How do I estimate diesel vs petrol costs?

Enter the current diesel or petrol price for your city in the fuel price field. Diesel is typically ₹15–20/litre cheaper than petrol, and diesel cars often deliver better highway mileage.

Can I use this for two-wheelers?

Yes. Enter your bike's mileage (often 35–60 kmpl) and the fuel price. Two-wheelers pay lower tolls or none at some plazas — set the toll estimate manually if needed.
