Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester based on the courses taken that semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all semester GPAs across your entire program, weighted by the number of credits in each semester.
How many credits is a typical semester in Indian engineering?
A typical B.Tech semester has 20–25 credits. Theory subjects carry 3–4 credits each, while labs carry 1–2 credits. A full 4-year program totals approximately 160–180 credits. Credit weight varies by university and course structure.
What CGPA is needed for an MS abroad?
For US universities, a CGPA of 8.0+ (on 10-point scale) or equivalent 3.2+ on 4-point scale is generally competitive. Top universities like MIT, Stanford, and CMU expect 8.5+ CGPA from Indian applicants. GRE scores and research experience also matter significantly.
Can I convert my CGPA to percentage for my resume?
Yes. Use CGPA × 9.5 for the standard formula. For example, 8.22 CGPA = 78.09%. Most Indian employers accept either format. It is best to mention both: "CGPA: 8.22/10 (78.09%)" to avoid confusion.
Does repeating a failed subject replace the F grade?
In most Indian universities, when you repeat a failed subject and pass, the new grade replaces the F in CGPA calculation. However, the F grade may still appear on your transcript with a note. Check your university's specific re-examination policy.
