How tip and bill splitting works

The tip is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax bill total, then added to get the final amount which is divided equally among all people.

Equal Split Formula
Tip = Bill × Tip%
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total ÷ People
Example: ₹2000 bill, 10% tip, 4 people → ₹550 each
Unequal Split
Each person pays their stated amount
Useful when people ordered different items and want to pay exactly for what they had.

Tipping customs in India

Restaurants

Tipping 5–10% is common at sit-down restaurants. Many restaurants already include a "service charge" of 5–10% — check your bill before adding extra.

GST on Bills

Restaurant bills include 5% GST for non-AC eateries and 18% for AC restaurants. Tip on the pre-GST amount if you want to be precise.

Quick Service

Tipping is optional at quick-service, takeaway and street food vendors. For delivery, ₹20–50 per order is a common gesture for delivery riders.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-GST or post-GST amount?

Conventionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax food and beverage total. However, in practice most people in India tip on the final bill amount shown. This calculator uses the total bill you enter as the base.

What is a "service charge" and is it the same as a tip?

A service charge is added by the restaurant automatically and goes to the establishment, not necessarily the staff. A tip (gratuity) is discretionary and you can give it directly to the server. The Indian government has guidelines making service charges optional.

How do I handle the unequal split if totals don't add up?

Enter each person's portion of the food bill. The tool sums them and shows the total. If the sum doesn't match the bill, the discrepancy is visible so you can adjust.

Can this tool handle large groups?

Yes. The equal split mode handles any number of people. For the unequal split, you can add as many people as needed using the "+ Add Person" button.

How is rounding handled?

Per-person amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee for display. Internally the calculation uses full decimal precision. In practice, one person can round up and another can round down to settle the exact bill.
