GST formulas used by this calculator

There are two cases depending on whether the price you have is before or after GST.

Price excludes GST (add GST)
GST = Base × Rate ÷ 100
Total = Base + GST
Example: ₹10,000 at 18% → GST = ₹1,800 → Total = ₹11,800
Price includes GST (remove GST)
Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
GST = Total − Base
Example: ₹11,800 at 18% → Base = ₹10,000 → GST = ₹1,800

CGST, SGST and IGST — what's the difference

India's GST is actually three taxes rolled into one depending on whether the sale is within a state or across states.

CGST + SGST

Applied when buyer and seller are in the same state. The GST is split equally — half goes to the Central Government (CGST) and half to the state (SGST). If the rate is 18%, each side gets 9%.

IGST

Applied when the transaction crosses state lines (inter-state). IGST equals the full GST rate — 18% stays as 18%. The Centre collects it and shares the state portion later. This calculator shows CGST + SGST by default (intra-state).

UTGST

Used instead of SGST in Union Territories that do not have a legislature — Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. Rate is identical to SGST.

Frequently asked questions

Is this GST calculator accurate?

The arithmetic is exact. What this calculator cannot tell you is which GST slab applies to your specific product — that depends on the HSN or SAC code assigned to it. Use the calculated figures as a reference and verify the applicable rate with a GST-registered professional or the CBIC HSN finder.

What GST rate applies to my business service?

Most services in India attract 18% GST. Exceptions include healthcare (0%), basic education (0%), life insurance (18%), and a few others. The applicable rate is defined by the SAC code for your service. Check cbic.gov.in or consult your CA.

Can I use this for filing GST returns?

No. This is a quick reference calculator. GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, etc.) must be filed on the official GST portal at gst.gov.in with exact invoice-level data.

What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

ITC lets registered businesses offset the GST paid on purchases (inputs) against the GST collected on sales (output tax). This calculator does not account for ITC — it only computes the gross GST on a single transaction.

When did GST come into effect in India?

GST was implemented on 1 July 2017, replacing a multi-layered system of central and state taxes including VAT, service tax, central excise duty, and over a dozen other levies.
