Driving safely on Indian highways

The 2-Hour Rule

Safety experts recommend stopping for at least 15 minutes every 2 hours of driving. Fatigue is a leading cause of highway accidents in India, especially on night drives.

Golden Hours

Plan to drive between 6 AM and 8 PM. Night driving on Indian highways carries significantly higher risk from unlit vehicles, cattle, and road debris.

Realistic Speed

Use 60 km/h as a conservative average for National Highways. State highways and ghat sections may average 40 km/h. Highways like NH48 or NH44 can sustain 80–90 km/h in good conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What average speed should I use for Indian highways?

For National Highways in flat terrain: 60–80 km/h. For hilly or ghat roads: 30–45 km/h. For urban stretches through towns: 25–35 km/h. When in doubt, use 60 km/h as a safe default for mixed driving.

How many rest stops do I need for a 500 km drive?

At 60 km/h, 500 km takes about 8.3 hours of driving. With a stop every 2 hours, you would need about 4 stops. Add 1 hour of rest time, making total travel time around 9.5 hours.

Should I factor in traffic jams?

This calculator does not account for traffic congestion. For routes passing through cities (e.g., Delhi–Jaipur via Gurugram, or Mumbai–Pune), add 30–90 minutes for city traffic, especially during peak hours.

What about fuel stops?

Fuel stops can often coincide with rest stops. On major highways, petrol stations are spaced 30–80 km apart. Plan your fuel strategy to fill up every 200–250 km to avoid running low in remote stretches.

Is it legal to drive more than 8 hours continuously in India?

For commercial vehicles, MV Act regulations limit driving hours. For private vehicles there is no hard legal cap, but fatigue driving is dangerous and increasingly recognised in accident law. Limiting personal driving to 8–10 hours per day is strongly recommended.
