Frequently asked questions

Which CGPA to percentage formula should I use?

Use the formula specified by your university. For most Indian universities on a 10-point scale, CGPA × 9.5 is the standard. Anna University graduates should use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. When applying for jobs, check whether the company specifies a formula; if not, the 9.5 multiplier is widely accepted.

Is 8.5 CGPA good?

On a 10-point scale, 8.5 CGPA converts to approximately 80.75% (using × 9.5 formula), which is considered excellent. Most top companies and government jobs consider 60% or 6.5 CGPA as the minimum cutoff.

Why does Anna University have a different formula?

Anna University adopted the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula to align with their internal grading rubric. The 0.75 deduction accounts for the rounding applied during grade point assignment. This formula is university-specific and should only be used for Anna University degrees.

Do all companies accept CGPA instead of percentage?

Most modern Indian companies, especially IT firms like TCS, Infosys, Wipro and startups, accept CGPA directly. Government jobs (SSC, banking, railways) typically require percentage. When a form asks for percentage, use the × 9.5 multiplier unless your university provides an official conversion.
