SGPA Formulas & Grade Reference

Indian universities typically use a 10-point grading scale. The table below shows the common letter-grade to grade-point mapping.

Grade → Points (10-Point Scale)
O   = 10  (Outstanding, 90–100%)
A+ = 9   (Excellent, 80–89%)
A   = 8   (Very Good, 70–79%)
B+ = 7   (Good, 60–69%)
B   = 6   (Above Avg, 50–59%)
C   = 5   (Average, 40–49%)
F   = 0   (Fail, below 40%)
SGPA Calculation Example
Maths: 9 pts × 4 cr = 36
Physics: 8 pts × 3 cr = 24
Chemistry: 7 pts × 3 cr = 21
Lab: 8 pts × 2 cr = 16
Total GP = 97, Total Credits = 12
SGPA = 97 ÷ 12 = 8.08
SGPA → % Formula (Anna Univ / Common)
Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10
Example: SGPA 8.08 → (8.08 − 0.75) × 10 = 73.3%
Widely used but not universal. Always verify with your university.
SGPA → % Formula (VTU / Most Colleges)
Percentage = SGPA × 9.5
Example: SGPA 8.08 → 8.08 × 9.5 = 76.76%
Used by VTU, Mumbai University, and most affiliated colleges.

Frequently asked questions

What is SGPA and how is it different from CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned in a single semester, weighted by credit hours. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all semester SGPAs across your entire program. SGPA resets each semester; CGPA tracks your overall academic performance.

Which SGPA to percentage formula should I use?

The most widely used formula in India is (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, officially recommended by Anna University and adopted by many affiliated colleges. VTU and several other universities use SGPA × 9.5. There is no single national standard — always check your university's official conversion policy, especially for job applications or admissions.

Is 8.0 SGPA good?

On a 10-point scale, 8.0 SGPA is considered very good. Using the common (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula it equals 72.5%, and with the × 9.5 formula it equals 76%. Most campus recruitment drives set a minimum of 6.0 or 7.0 SGPA, so 8.0 puts you in a strong position for placements and higher studies.

Can I enter a custom grade point instead of a letter grade?

Yes. The SGPA calculator on this page lets you type any grade point value (0–10) directly for each subject, so it works for any university grading scheme — not just the standard O/A+/A/B+/B/C/F system.

How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ(All Semester Credits). You need the SGPA and total credits for each semester. For example, if Semester 1 SGPA is 8.0 (24 credits) and Semester 2 SGPA is 8.5 (22 credits): CGPA = (8.0×24 + 8.5×22) ÷ (24+22) = (192 + 187) ÷ 46 = 8.24.
