How to use rent receipts for HRA claims

Submit to Employer

Submit rent receipts to your employer's payroll team (usually in January–February) to adjust TDS. Receipts must have a ₹1 revenue stamp if the amount exceeds ₹5,000 per month.

PAN Requirement

If your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh (i.e., more than ₹8,333/month), you must provide your landlord's PAN. Without it, the employer cannot process your HRA exemption claim.

Keep Evidence

Keep a rent agreement along with receipts. If the total is significant, also maintain bank transfer records as evidence of actual payment made to the landlord.

Frequently asked questions

Is a revenue stamp required on rent receipts?

Yes, if a single receipt is for more than ₹5,000, it should bear a ₹1 revenue stamp with the landlord's signature across it. For monthly rents above ₹5,000, affix a revenue stamp to each receipt before the landlord signs.

Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to a family member?

You can claim HRA if you pay rent to a parent who owns the property. However, the rent must be genuinely paid (bank transfer recommended). You cannot claim HRA for rent paid to a spouse — the Income Tax department does not recognise spouse as a separate economic entity for this purpose.

What if I am staying in a different city from where I get HRA?

HRA is calculated based on the city where you actually reside and pay rent, not where your employer is located. If you pay rent in a metro (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai), the HRA exemption is up to 50% of basic salary.

How much HRA is exempt from tax?

The HRA exemption under the old regime is the minimum of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) 50% of basic salary for metro cities or 40% for others, and (3) actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. This calculator helps generate the receipts; use the HRA Exemption Calculator on this site to find your exempt amount.

Do I need to submit original receipts or can I use printouts?

Most employers accept printed receipts with the landlord's signature (hand-signed). Digital receipts are increasingly accepted, but it is advisable to get the landlord's physical signature on printed copies for any amount exceeding ₹5,000/month.
