How the crorepati calculator works

Both modes use the standard SIP (annuity) future value formula. The "time" mode rearranges it to solve for the number of months using logarithms; the "SIP needed" mode rearranges it to solve for the monthly instalment.

Solving for time (months)
n = ln(1 + FV·r / (P·(1+r))) / ln(1+r)
Where FV = target, P = monthly SIP, r = monthly rate (annual/12). Example: ₹10,000/month at 12% to reach ₹1 crore takes about 20 years 1 month.
Solving for monthly SIP
P = FV·r / ((1+r) · ((1+r)^n − 1))
Where n = total months. Example: to reach ₹1 crore in 15 years at 12%, you need about ₹19,819/month.

Tips to reach ₹1 crore faster

Start Early

The earlier you begin, the more compounding does the heavy lifting. A delay of even 5 years can mean lakhs more out of your own pocket.

Step Up Annually

Raising your SIP 10% every year as your income grows shrinks the time to ₹1 crore dramatically compared with a flat amount.

Stay Invested

Don't pause during market dips. Crorepati goals are long-term — interrupting your SIP resets the compounding curve.

Frequently asked questions

How much SIP do I need to become a crorepati?

It depends on your time horizon and expected return. At a 12% annual return, you need roughly ₹19,800/month for 15 years, ₹10,000/month for about 20 years, or about ₹5,000/month for around 25 years to reach ₹1 crore. Use the "Monthly SIP needed" mode to get the exact figure for your goal year.

Is a 12% return realistic for reaching ₹1 crore?

Diversified equity mutual funds in India have historically delivered 10–13% CAGR over 10+ year periods. 12% is a reasonable long-term assumption, but returns are not guaranteed and vary year to year. Try 10% for a conservative estimate and 15% for an aggressive one using the comparison table.

Can I change the target from ₹1 crore?

Yes. The target corpus field is editable in both modes. Enter ₹50 lakh, ₹2 crore, or any goal — the calculator solves for the time or the monthly SIP accordingly.

Does this account for inflation?

No. The result is the nominal corpus, not its purchasing power. ₹1 crore in 20 years will buy less than ₹1 crore today. If you want to preserve real value, set a higher target or factor in roughly 6% inflation when choosing your goal.

Why does a small SIP take so long even at high returns?

Compounding accelerates over time, so most of the growth happens in the final years. A modest monthly amount needs many years before the corpus base is large enough for returns to dominate. Increasing the SIP or starting earlier both cut the time substantially.
