How to calculate salary hike percentage
A salary hike (or pay raise) is usually expressed as a percentage of your current salary. You can either start from a hike percentage to find your new salary, or compare your old and new salary to find the percentage increase.
What is a good salary hike in India?
Average annual increments in India typically range from 8% to 12% for steady performers, with top performers often receiving 15% or more.
Changing employers usually fetches a bigger jump — commonly 20% to 40%, and sometimes 50%+ for in-demand skills or senior roles.
A promotion bundled with a role change often adds 15% to 30% on top of the regular increment, reflecting added responsibility.

Frequently asked questions
How to calculate salary hike percentage?
Subtract your old salary from your new salary, divide the difference by your old salary, then multiply by 100. For example, if your salary rose from ₹50,000 to ₹57,500, the hike is (57,500 − 50,000) / 50,000 × 100 = 15%. The same formula works whether you use monthly or annual figures, as long as both salaries are in the same period.
How do I calculate my new salary after a hike?
Multiply your current salary by (1 + hike% / 100). For a 10% hike on ₹40,000, the new salary is 40,000 × 1.10 = ₹44,000. The increase is ₹4,000.
Should I calculate hike on monthly or annual salary?
The percentage is identical either way because it is a ratio. Use whichever is convenient — this calculator lets you switch between monthly and annual and shows both equivalents in the result.
What is a good salary hike percentage in India?
For annual appraisals, 8–12% is average and 15%+ is strong. When switching jobs, hikes of 20–40% are common, and high-demand skills can fetch even more. Anything below inflation (currently 4–6%) is effectively a real-terms pay cut.
Is the salary hike calculated on gross or in-hand salary?
Hikes are usually announced on your CTC (Cost to Company) or gross salary, not your in-hand amount. Because of taxes and deductions, your take-home increase may be slightly lower than the headline hike percentage suggests.
