Understanding your typing speed
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
The average typist achieves 40–60 WPM. Professional typists and data entry clerks typically type at 70–100 WPM. Touch-typists who don't look at the keyboard average 60–80 WPM. Stenographers can exceed 200 WPM.
What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?
Raw WPM is the total characters typed divided by 5 (standard word length), divided by time. Adjusted WPM subtracts error penalties. Raw WPM ≥ WPM always.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy = (Correct characters / Total characters typed) × 100. An error is any character typed that doesn't match the passage character at that position.
How do I improve my typing speed?
Practice touch typing (all 10 fingers without looking), learn the home row keys (ASDF JKL;), type daily for 15–30 minutes, and focus on accuracy over speed initially. Tools like Keybr and Monkeytype are excellent for structured practice.
Does typing speed matter for jobs?
Yes — many office, data entry, legal, medical, and journalism roles specify minimum WPM requirements. 50 WPM is a common baseline; medical transcriptionists often need 75+ WPM.
