Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CGST+SGST and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) each at half the applicable rate are charged for intra-state transactions — where the seller and buyer are in the same state. IGST (Integrated GST) at the full rate is charged for inter-state transactions. For example, 18% GST intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. Inter-state = 18% IGST.
What is HSN/SAC code on a GST invoice?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods; SAC (Services Accounting Code) classify services. Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must mention HSN codes for all items. Below ₹5 crore, 4-digit codes are sufficient. Service providers use 6-digit SAC codes.
Is a digital/printed invoice valid for GST purposes?
Yes. GST law allows both physical and electronic invoices. An e-invoice (IRP-generated with IRN and QR code) is required for taxpayers above ₹10 crore turnover. For others, a self-generated printed invoice on this tool is valid if it contains all mandatory GST invoice fields.
What fields are mandatory on a GST invoice?
Mandatory fields include: GSTIN of supplier, invoice number (unique sequential), invoice date, GSTIN of recipient (if registered), place of supply, HSN/SAC code, description, quantity, unit, taxable value, GST rate, CGST/SGST/IGST amounts, and total invoice value. Supplier's name and address are also required.
What GST rates apply to services?
Common service GST rates: 0% (essential services, basic healthcare), 5% (restaurants without AC, economy hotel rooms), 12% (AC restaurants, business class hotel), 18% (most professional services like IT, consulting, auditing, advertising), 28% (five-star hotels, gambling). Check the GST Council rate schedule for specific categories.
