How PIN codes are structured

India's PIN (Postal Index Number) system was introduced in 1972. The 6-digit code has a hierarchical structure where each level narrows down the location.

1st digit
Postal Zone (1–9). India is divided into 9 postal zones based on geography.
1st–2nd digits
Sub-zone / State. The first two digits together identify the state or sub-zone.
1st–3rd digits
Sorting District. Identifies the district-level sorting office responsible for delivery.
4th–6th digits
Delivery Post Office. Identifies the specific post office within the sorting district.
