How the scaler works

The scaler multiplies each ingredient amount by the ratio of desired servings to original servings. A ratio of 1.5 means you're making 50% more; 0.5 means half the recipe.

Scale Factor
Factor = Desired ÷ Original
Example: 6 servings ÷ 4 original = 1.5× scale factor
Scaled Amount
New Amount = Original × Factor
Example: 200g flour × 1.5 = 300g flour

Frequently asked questions

Can I scale spices the same way?

Spices often do not scale linearly. When doubling a recipe, start with 1.5× the spice amount and adjust to taste. Strong spices like chilli and salt need less than the mathematical ratio at large scales.

What does ½ cup mean in grams?

It depends on the ingredient. For water or milk, ½ cup is about 120ml. For flour it is about 60g, for sugar about 100g. Use the Cooking Unit Converter on this site for exact conversions by ingredient.

How do I scale baking powder and baking soda?

Leavening agents scale close to linearly for small adjustments. However for very large batches (3× or more) use 25% less than the calculated amount, as too much leavening can make baked goods collapse.

Does scaling affect cooking time?

Usually not for stovetop recipes. For baking, use the same temperature but check doneness 5–10 minutes early if making smaller portions, or later for much larger pans. Pan size affects cook time more than quantity.

Can I scale a recipe to a fraction, like 0.5 servings?

Yes — enter 0.5 in the desired servings field. The scaler handles any decimal. Results are shown as fractions where applicable (½, ¼, ¾) for easier measurement.
